The Will and the Word
"The ability to articulate is the most dangerous thing you can possess."
- Jordan Peterson
Swords and shields have shaped worlds, but words have built empires. Burned cities, freed people, enslaved minds. Inspired a generation to greatness and lured others toward destruction.
Historical figures spoke beautifully. Tyrants spoke passionately about revolution while orchestrating genocide. Benefactors encouraged violence while fighting for the oppressed. The difference isn't vocabulary. It's intention. Words are morally neutral. Tools to be utilised or weaponised.
The Storyteller's Throne
"The most powerful person in the world is the storyteller. The storyteller sets the vision, values and agenda of an entire generation that is to come”
- Steve Jobs
Whoever controls the story controls the narrative. Poets, playwrights, and philosophers have shaped culture for centuries. Influenced how we see power, love, and human nature. The best leaders aren't necessarily the brightest or strongest, but the most compelling speakers and writers.
The wordsmith isn't the one who uses long winded words that lead nowhere. It's the one who can weave, marry, and paint pictures in our minds.
The Formula
“If I don’t tell the story, somebody else will"
-Belgarath the Sorcerer
Growing up, my favourite book series was David Eddings' Belgariad. In it, magic worked through a simple formula: "The Will and the Word." You needed the intention to change reality and the language to make it happen.
Every great achievement in history started with someone who had the will to change something and the words to make others believe it was possible.
The will without the word is just wishful thinking. The word without the will is empty rhetoric.
But when combined....magic.
"When your mind is loud write. When it's quiet, read"
This isn't something everyone wants. Many are happy to spectate. Many thrive in chaotic communication and some simply don't find the value in it.
But if we choose to, we can harness this gift. The intention to impact and the ability to articulate.
Every great communicator you admire started where we are now. They cultivated and practiced until clarity, precision and impact become natural.
Write. Read. Speak. Film. Paint.
Revive the art of conversation and genuine discussion.
This isn't about looking smart and impressing. It's about reclaiming your voice in a world that needs those who think clearly and communicate honestly. Words shape realities.
The thrones are empty. The storytellers of tomorrow are starting today. Not by credentials or connections, but by the courage to express themselves at the risk of ridicule.
We have the thoughts worth sharing, the experiences worth telling and the insights worth spreading. All we need is the will to use them and the words to make them matter.
The formula is ancient. The opportunity is now.
The will and the word. Master them.
